new to solar, just bought a house with solar

Postby zongatron » Tue Jan 30, 2018 8:44 pm

Hi everybody,
I have just purchased a house with solar and was wondering what do I do when I move in?
1) Do i just flick the mains switch and away I go?
Or should I get a solar guy out to run me through things so I dont break it?
2) Is it safe to get on the roof and/or touch the panels when its turned on or do I need to turn it off every time I go up and clean the gutters?
Thanks
Ben

Welcome to the Energy Matters Forums Ben :)

Your PV system should have a full set of instructions for the correct turning on/off procedure- ask the previous owner about it if you can.

It is good practice to turn the array off before you go up, although it should be safe if everything is in proper working order. You wont lose much production if you turn it off just to clean the panels or the gutters, particularly if done very early or late in the day, or in cloudy weather.

If the gutters need cleaning often, perhaps there are trees overhanging the roof that will be eating into your solar production, and they need pruning? A little bit of shade can have a large effect on the output of a PV system.

Hi Gordon,
Thank you very much.
We have just bought the house from the state government as its surplus to their needs so may not be able to contact the original owner.
I will make a call to the real estate.
In light of that, is it best to have a solar sparky come out or should I be able to identify the system by name (somewhere on the box) and locate a manual online?
Thanks

You should be able to find a manual for the inverter online, just go to the manufacturers website to find that.

There wont be a whole of system manual though, as each system is different. If you can discover who installed the system, it would be worth talking to them to see what you can find out. If it was a state govt house, they (via the real estate agent) should be able to tell you who the installer was, or the CEC might. I'm not sure how much info they will give out though, never having had dealings with them myself.

Are there any labels or notes on or near the inverter with the installer's details?

Hi Gordon,
I havent moved in yet so cant say if there are any instructions near the invertor.
I spoke to the real estate and he has the contact details of the previous owner before the government bought it (they bought it to build a hwy and ended up not demolishing it and so have sold it off).
I have asked him to ask the previous owners if they have any info or if they know who installed it etc.
So fingers crossed.
Thanks again.

Are you talking about a grid connected system Ben?

Hi again,
I move in tomorrow, however have been able to have a bit of a snoop.
The only information on the inverter is a shutdown procedure, which says to shut down the ac first, then the dc array second.

I have no other information as the previous owner hasn't actually brought the paperwork into the realestate even though she said she would.

The solar has a switch on the mains board which is already on.
Would I simply do the reverse of the shutdown procedure to fire it up?
Or would it be best to get someone out to take a closer look in case I damage something?
Thanks guys.

The will be a RED label that's lists the voltage/s and short circuit current/s on. With those generally one can workout approximately what the system size is along with make, model of the inverter.

Ac off, DC off.

Reverse to power back up. Is DC on, Ac on (all Ac switches/CB's that are associated with system in you case by the sound of it 2), wait approx one min system should go online and start producing power if its working OK and the grid is available and connected.
