Solar Assisted Coal Plant Project Planned For Queensland

In news from Queensland Premier Anna Bligh's office just released, the State Government and an international energy company are endeavouring to establish a project help make coal fired power generation more efficient using solar power.

The ability to retrofit this technology onto existing power stations makes it's potential huge, however, due to the variability of energy from the solar thermal plant throughout the day/year, a not insignificant control strategy would have to be implemented alongside the hardware. I can see this being a slight hurdle for older power stations that have not had a recent control system upgrade.

Feedwater heating uses energy that would otherwise go to turn the turbine, so while it increases overall thermal efficiency, if you can use an external power source like sunlight to do this, you can increase your power output. It's a brilliant idea.

ETA: It seems there has been a small pilot plant using this technology at Liddell power station in NSW since 2007.
