for example can a DC solar array ground to an AC distribution / fuse box ground? or even directly to the AC ground stake?

No, DC ground array must ultimately go to the earth bar in the SB, can go via the AC grid connect inverter for instance.

The sparky installing the array should know that though, in the end the earth should be unbroken to the SB that the Inverter is also connected to.
If it's a DC coupled array it still applies. Labeling inside the SB is also required that identifies the array/s solar earth wire/s, and it must be a minimum 4mm2 although longer runs will require a larger size earth cable.

thanks again David. I've run 4mm2, it's about a 10m run total to the SB.
