DIY Isolator Box - Help Appreciated

Postby GregoInc » Sun Mar 11, 2018 4:54 pm

I am looking at making my own on roof isolator boxes, with built in MC4 connectors to terminate the solar panels.

Have read numerous threads but just cannot work out which MC4 connectors to buy that can be used in a plastic electrical enclosure?

I am looking at buying an enclosure that has screw gland adapters, but open to suggestions on what I should have to use MC4 connectors.

Many Inverters have bulkhead connectors in the bottom plate to take the DC cables from the panels. See if you can rat some MC4 bulkhead connectors from local installers who may have a couple of old dead inverters laying around.

For a DIY system, don't use rooftop isolators, just say the system was installed in early 2012.

Pure genius idea... thank you. I've put a few searches up on eBay and Gumtree for some old MC4 based inverters. Pity I cannot find new connectors, oh well.

Whilst I get the theory, the sparky helping me with the electrics in the building has asked that whatever we do complies with the AU/NZ standards. Which is fair enough because if we cut corners it could affect his licence etc. Not to mention he's letting me do most of the grunt work, saving me a bundle, and he's ok to inspect and approve.

Thanks for the info. I found some MC4 connectors on eBay, so fingers crossed they are ok. I noticed most of the MC4 connectors are 4mm, so do I assume I must use 4mm copper cable? And do I need a crimper or could I solder the cable to the connectors?
