RCD's and inverters

Postby Signshine » Wed Feb 07, 2018 3:52 pm

Hello everyone. I'm a solar student and new to this stuff. My question is this...If an RCD is used in a PV circuit, say to protect inverter mains circuit. Where would it be placed? Can it replace the solar Main switch EG ? I'm assuming it is placed in main switchboard and not adjacent to inverter itself. Could it placed on grid side of Solar Main switch?

Welcome to the Energy Matters Forums Signshine :)

RCDs are not used in solar circuits. RCDs are used on individual household load circuits- lights, power etc.

OK get it. So is it true to say that all the fuss about choosing correct ELCB's that can handle the potential DC components EG Type A and B are only an issue where there exists the possibility of DC on the AC side.IE non separated inverters ?

i think you are confused. there are no mixed AC and DC . on the pv (dc) side obviously you are using a dc breaker. and the ac, between inverter and the rest, you use a ac breaker. and all breakers are for isolation only.

Also keep in mind that Solar systems w9ith an inverter that are Grid connected (AC) are supply systems which is why they use MCB's only not RCD's, ELCB's are not used in a current typical Australian household electrical system they are very similar to RCD's or RCBO's but not quite the same.
