2.5mm twin and earth flat cable for inverter to smart meter

Postby andyn » Wed Mar 22, 2017 6:27 pm

Hi,

We have a spare 2.5mm twin and earth flat cable from the smart meter box (in VIC) to the back of the house, where we'd like the inverter to be installed. Can we use this cable to connect a solar inverter to the smart meter?

The connection is something like this:
- Solar panels on roof (3kW), with cable run down to the back of the house -> connect to inverter -> connect to smart meter at the front of the house using existing spare 2.5mm twin and earth flat cable.

The installation will be done by professional installer of course. The initial installer we talked to seemed to think that was OK, but I thought I should get a second opinion.

Thanks
Andy

How far are you talking, for solar I tend to use heavier cable (4mm2 or even 6mm2 or heavier if the installation calls for it) than you would use for GPO's due to the fact you must cater for voltage rise rather than voltage drop, the window for voltage rise is much smaller compared to the voltage drop allowance.

Hi David,

The distance is around 25m.

It is just not very straight forward to put in new cables, that's why this available 2.5mm2 cable might be our only hope to be able to install solar panels.

How is the house construction, ie Brick veneer with a hip tin roof for instance.

The construction is 3 storey with concrete panel walls and colour bond roof.

Is the roof flat (skillion) or gable or a hip roof (gable with aloping ends) and is that solid concrete or is there a cavity?

Its does not matter that much any decent sparkie can run cables in one way or another. It can even be on the outside of the wall/s if required in conduit.

Hi David,

The roof is flat, and there is no gap between our wall and neighbour's, on the side of the meter box.
The concrete is solid.

The only way down to the meter box that I can see is outside of the front wall, via a conduit, which the wife is not keen to do as that is too visible :(

It looks like the 2.5mm2 cable is not something you would recommend?

Thanks

It depends on what the distributor will allow. It maybe fine, but it might not if the sparkie does the job properly he will workout if it's useable or not.

Is a big problem if its visible vertically, we've done jobs where we have lifted a sheet to install power cable, theres more than one way to do a job . Conduit is perfectly legal on the outside of a building if it on the side often it tends to not very noticeable. You can paint it thats makes it much harder to spot.

Thanks for your insights David, I will get a proper Sparkie to make an assessment.
