Wanted _ Controller solar /wind

Postby harry201 » Wed Dec 19, 2018 3:01 pm

Hi to all, I live off grid in country Vic and have been for 5yrs.
I have 3xMissouri controller for the solar and wind and they use solenoids as part of their system. The problem that I keep happening is burning these solenoids out, I'm up to number 5 :(
Can anyone help me with out costing me an arm and leg to change these to something more reliable?
I'm running a 24v system with 30 x 250w panels and 2 wind turbines with 12 x 2v Gel batteries which I'll like to increase for storage, but that's another problem.
Regards

more info, model, capacity and a couple of photos would be useful along with current ratings etc.
My magic eyes are not working at the moment :)

Thanks for having a look at things for us davidg, I'll try my best to give the info you need but I'm no tecko guy I'm self taught.
The controllers: are Missouri and Wind -HVM 440 Amp Charge Controller for Wind Turbines & Solar Panels (MW440HVM) , HVA Hybrid Controller For Wind Turbines & Solar Panels (MW440HVA) and Digital 880 Amp Charge Controller with Divert Relay & LED Meter for Wind and Solar (MW880ECCDIG).
Batteries: 12 x 2v1200 Gel. Solar: 30 x 24v250w panels. Wind: 1 x 2000w turbine, 1 x 400w turbine.
I'm not sore if pic's come through, let me know.

Thanks

so it is one of these?

I'm guessing the relay/contactor is to push excess power into a dump load/s.....

If that is the case what is the existing maximum current you really need to divert.
N.B. for solar typically you don't this type diversion method, if the right type of charge control system is being used. ie a midnite solar for instance they are quite a bit more expensive compared to the model you mention, however they extract a decent amount more power from the solar in comparison.

It is somewhat crude for wind turbines nowadays as well but you really do need a dump load method for them otherwise the turbines would spin out of control. again the midnite solar classic range could be used, but again a lot more expensive.

I note the actual duty cycle for the model of controller is rated at only 20% duty cycle, I would suggest that the reason has a lot to do with the solenoids that are being used. Any mechanical solenoid like the ones being used are not designed for being "on" for extended periods of time. The coils would likely burnout in them from extended "on" time which I'm guessing is what occurring.

Without getting into what's better and why I think either a proper contactor or SSR's would be a better option, current rating yet to determined. The reason is that they are designed to be on for extended or continuous periods of time.

If however the contactor is turning on and off at high speed then even a contactor contacts will wear out, which means that SSR/s should be considered as replacements, keeping in mind that they also have a duty cycle rating and suitable heat sink needs to be observed if you wish to use them in 100% duty cycle system. ie ensure that only lets say 50% of their maximum load rating/s all they will ever see for instance. If the peak current is for extended periods of time, then ensure that it is not more than say 40% of their maximum current rating and also ensure the heat-sink is big enough for the job.

It's not black and white it is design issue that needs to dealt with. Design should if all possible be for 100% duty cycle, that way it is highly unlikely to fail, leading to much peace of mind.

yes it is one of those.
I understand mostly of what you are saying, the duty cycle I don't quite understand. As for having the right design system I agree, however when we first moved here we contacted 3 professionals to help, design and do the job but only 1 turned up gave us his thoughts then was going home to send through a quote, that was 5 years ago and still waiting and the others never turned up, so my son & I set it up the best we could.
Did the pic's come through?
