I know this thread is getting old know. Is there any chance you have any pictures of the wiring at the back of the STC to the Engel plug please. I have 2 Engels one gold and an older platinum one which is driving me nuts freezing things at night. I was going to mount it in the top of the fridge but this is a far better idea.
cheers Matt

Hi, I'm a newly here - great site though!

At the risk of reviving an old thread, this is a common problem. I have a new EvaKool DC110 fridge and it still has the old 'dumb' non-temperature control (ie, maybe controls cycling, but not temperature, as described by Kurt on page 1 of this thread). Salads freeze, not good.

You mentioned a ready made plug & play unit back then but it is no longer available, but possibly the same Ebay seller has this one:
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/12v-DIGITAL ... SwQcJaDPID

For those of us not so electronically inclined, is it likely to be a good solution? The specs say it's good for 10A 12v - opinion? Or is a relay just good insurance anyway?

Thanks in advance!

Try this one.

The hysterisys can be set to suit your requirement.
It's cheaper than the EBay one too.

Thanks for that suggestion - it would need to be installed in a box to protect it (a la the Jaycar boxes noted above), as it has no front panel.

The above suggested unit is incredibly simple to use compared to some "similar" units elsewhere.
I'm sure you will have no problem putting it in a case yourself.

There are lots of sellers advertising a W1209 controller but these are complex to set up.
They are all supplied without instructions and you would have to search the web for programming instructions, not to mention "interpreting" those instructions.

Just did a search on eBay for the item I recommended,
XHW1401 DC 12 volt Digital display thermostat controller with sensor AZ.
less than $10 delivered.

Hope those controllers have time delays to prevent hot starts. I suggest 5 minutes. Partial to that W1209.

I run a chest fridge on a NANO which is a little more complicated. What is unique about this system is it runs on only a car battery and only during the day. I run at about 1C and use at least 6 gallons of water to store cold thru the night. And this system is reliable. Fridge will not even start until the battery is over 13.8V and that battery powers everything else too. Have about 2KW of panels so it will work even on the worst rainy days. Those panels are also very poor performing because they are flat and under a tree with occasional shading. All my water is PV heated with excess power that doesn't go elsewhere. Under micro control it is a really nice camp setup, even have a dishwasher with heated dry. I was amazed, the new ones take less than 100W to run.

if you need to set delays other than that provided by a temperature differencial, there is a programmable timer also available for around five dollars delivered. search eBay for W1219 module.
one supplier offers both for just over ten dollars delivered for the pair.
