Solar Hot water

Postby hjh38 » Wed Sep 23, 2009 11:01 am

We have just installed a solar hot water split system, It uses a "solastat controller which allows the owner to set the on and off parameters .ie: when the solar collector is 5-25 deg hotter than the tank temp the pump turns on until the collector is 1-10 deg warmer than the tank it turns the pump off. The information that came with the tank states to set the controller at 2deg(off) and 4 deg(on) , the installers said 6(off) and 12(on).
The controller manufacturer use to sell a rs232 computer link for the controller , which graphs daily and weekly temps, but no longer have them.
I have been monitoring it each day , changing the values .

Does anyone know the optimum settings ?????

Hi Harley,

Is the controller a White (SolaStat 1) , or the previously sold type, silver Solastat controller?

Generally, the setting is set by the manufacturer at 12on, 6 off. This is the best setting for evacuated tubes.

Thanks for the reply
It is a white one and I was thinking that the distance from the tubes may make a difference ?

Im taking readings each day and recording them (driving the wife batty)

we supply the Apricus solar tubes and have found 12 on and 6 off to be better,
we found when set at 8 and 2, coming into the warmer months in the year the collector was not getting down to the 2 degree differential, and pump wouldnt cycle just continue to run..
