Grounding Requirements for PV racking

Postby Ian » Tue Aug 25, 2015 12:20 pm

I have built my own ground mounted frame (topped with Titan Solar Rails) and need to ground the metal structure all down to a local Ground Spike. I have all the necessary Earthing Lugs and Earthing Clips but I am not sure on the type of cable that is suitable to connect rails to frame to ground spike.
Is the standard 2.5mm2 Earth Cable (insulated in Green/Yellow stripped) used for Mains power systems suitable (stripped back at the connection points off course).

Thanks

Welcome Ian,

Standard earth wire is 4mm2 although I wonder if earthing is necessary with a ground mounted system.
Network = Powercor .. Retailer = Origin .. Installed Christmas 2008
Latronics PV-1200 feed by 8xTrina TSM DC-01 .. 170watt = 1360watts DC in .. 1096watts AC out .. 5+years later 990watts ac out

Thanks, I have some 6mm2 which will do (think Masters miss priced it).

Ground systems still need a good conductor to ground for safety (in case of fault, there is potentially 400+ VDC) as the conduction path through Concrete footings is not assured. Also a easy path for Lightning.

Yes still required under AS5033 and min of 4mm2. However it depends on exact type of system being installed and controller or grid inverter being used these may required the earth is brought to common point so they for instance detect a voltage leak they may not but some devices need it to function correctly. Worth checking the control unit requirements/manual.
