A coal-less Australia?

Coal - Does Australia Really Need It? What would a coal-less Australia look like? Is it even possible economically in the short term?

Put a 1 kW PV system on literally every house and we still only end up with about 5% of our total electricity consumption - somewhat less than we get from hydro or gas and massively less than we get from coal.

Long term there's no real choice - even without climate change coal is a finite resource. But short term I just can't see any real alternative - we're not likely to see an 80% drop in electricity consumption anytime soon.
