Repurposing old toothbrushes

Postby MichaelB » Mon Sep 28, 2009 8:27 am

Thounsands of tonnes of toothbrushes end up in landfill every year. It's something we don't think too much about - we use them, we throw them away.

Help keep your old toothbrush out of the waste stream! They can also be used in place of other products you may buy. Given the small head size of a toothbrush, they are really handy for all sorts of fiddly jobs around the home, including:

- Cleaning in between tiles

- Removing dust caked onto other items.

- Comb cleaning

- Paintbrush for kids art projects

- Cleaning a cheese grater

- Cleaning jewellery

- Upholstery and carpet stain removal

- Applying hair dye

- Scrubbing dirt off hard skinned fruit and vegetables

- Remove gunk from battery terminals

- Cleaning mud or dog poop from shoes

Of course, remember to disinfect your toothbrush before repurposing it for some of the above applications :)

All good ideas MichaelB you could also make a bristle bot for the kids.

you use an old toothbrush head, a small battery and the vibrating bit out of an old mobile phone.

And - Best of all - cleaning the Shower-Screen tracks

AND - Keeping them for guest who arrives unannounced..

Tell them the next day that it's no problem or expense,
because you use it to clean the shower-tracks anyway !

I use mine with a bit of citrus degreaser to clean my mountain bike gears- great for getting in between the sprockets, so long as the bristles haven't gone too soft.
