Yep, they were gum trees here that got struck by 'lightning', at least the hand held 'lightning' generators !! ;)

No good in pruning them every couple of years.

Horses for courses, but the way I see it is.... As the trees do the cooling for free, the solar panels can offset the other energy consumption.
This approach is fundamental to overall passive solar design and efficiency principles.
It is far more efficient to minimise energy consumption, then there is less costly infrastructure needed to supply wasteful practices.
