Status of SA "100 day or No pay" Solution.

Postby GarnZ » Wed Oct 04, 2017 8:47 am

Is it true that we will know, by end November 2017, whether or not, SA will have a solution to the battery storage proposal suggested, earlier this year? Doesn't seem to be much info on this major Lithium battery installation.
Will it Work?
As an allied subject... I often wonder whether the demolition of of those high voltage carriers towers, during the SA storms were the major cause of the blackouts of SA. Those towers structures must be ageing somewhat by now.

It was and certainly most of the state would been blacked out regardless of what political spin the LNP might try and put on it. They are so full of it, it's got to the point the BS is exceeding the height of mount Kosciuszko.

There's a report some place that documents the fact that renewables did not cause the blackouts and there was no way any other forms of energy would have fared better, no matter what BS is spun.

I can't dig up a link for you but I've read in the last few days that the SA Lithium battery bank could be up and running in December. The "start" date was moved to when they signed some form of contract rather than when the original offer was made ;) .

As to whether it will work, I seriously hope so! On a minor scale we saw what happened when Samsung got their batteries wrong in a mobile phone. Tech failures can be instant and dramatic and there will be many people out there ready to deride this effort. As a sidelight on this, I saw a suggestion that the Tesla battery bank could power 30,000 homes. Umm, for how long, a minute, an hour, a day or a week? News reports can be so meaningless and yet so unchallenged.

As to the towers ... who knows? So much of what happens where large companies enter into contracts is "commercial in confidence" that it's near impossible for tax payers to know the truth.

On a slightly related current issue, the discussions about gas pricing, even with the ACCC as a watchdog, don't exactly inspire confidence in the idea that gas prices will drop or that there will be an open and transparent process.

Also, the question of the batteries "working" might get complicated by the how they're used. If they're on standby for moments like the great SA power news event, fine, but it's possible that they could be used to feed power back into the grid when the spot price is high so as to make a profit. The obvious result could be that the batteries would be flat when they were needed most.

I think we already know, since it is already operating.

>>The 100MW/129MWh battery array will be used partially to “time shift” the delivery of wind power from Hornsdale, but most of it is dedicated to helping stabilise the grid and keeping the lights on in case of a major disruption like last year’s storm that led to the “system black.”

I think you will find the prime use for them is to buffer power for the grid when there is a requirement from say wind to low wind for couple of minutes such as would happen on gusty day or with solar when the sun gets covered by clouds and then pops out again for instance the size and capacity of it lends itself to supply/buffer power and/or while a gas turbine/s is/are powered up. This is where you need instant power to make it work continuously and to supply the continuous frequency sync for the big wind turbines and solar PV as well.

Yes, thanks Gordon and David, that appears to be the case, which is a victory for good management.

Any reports out, as yet, on the success or otherwise of the SA solution?
Maybe they are waiting for some serious trials.
I'm hoping it will be the start of something big!

It has already been used, charging and delivering up to 70MW. It was even helping the grid the day before the official opening.
