Thermal Leak Detector

Postby JohnMac » Sat Oct 10, 2009 4:45 pm

Just read in a magazine that Black and Decker have a thermal leak detector for tracing draughts and hotspots around the house. The unit is called a TLD1000. I couldn't find it adverised in Aus. so I emailed B&D and they said it is not available in this country. Does anyone have one? How useful is it?

You can buy them from AMAZON, but I wonder what they would do.

It seems to be a simple Heat-Sensor. I suspect that it has a laser pointer and a readout of temperature.
IF - that is all it does, then there are MANY similar devices available in Australia

Infa red photography of the house is another good way to see what is going on.

Thermal Camera - Now that's something that I could use.

But last time I checked, they are an astronomic price.

Jaycar have a small non-contact thermometer for $not very much (think I paid under $30). You could do a thermal map of your house with one of these if you wanted to save $thousands on a camera that views a large area in 1 view. Just make hand-held measurements in a grid pattern around the areas of interest and plot them on a photo... you could draw up your own isotherm map of a wall without too too much effort.

Yep, sounds like a lot of work Gordon but the cheap option. I did some hunting and you can now buy a FLIR-I5 infrared camera for around $2000. Still a bit dear for me but I like the idea of an infrared map of the building.
