Need help with first major project

Postby jeremy089786 » Fri Jan 27, 2012 6:13 pm

Hi Guys,

To start with, I have no experience in solar power expect for a keen interest in reading about new technologies, so any help is much appreciated!!

The electricity to my pool recently went and it will cost several thousand dollars to install a new line so I thought it may be viable to install a solar system for roughly the same amount of money. I just bought myself a power reader and have come up with these figures:

Device Power use (W)
Filter 1250
Polaris 1200
Filter + Polaris 2450
Spa filter 1050
Gas heater 8.5

As for the amount we use them (all during summer)... the spa is on for 6 hours a day, the polaris is on for 1 - 2 hours a day and the spa filter is infrequently on, for a couple of hours (the heater is only used in winter and runs on gas). That would mean we would use about 10 -15 KW/h per day, though the vast majority of the time it would be around 10. Also, I will only ever have the polaris and filter on together, which will draw 2450 watts.

As for the location I have added a photo, but I would probably put the solar panels on a west facing roof that receives full afternoon sun.

So my questions are... What do I need and how hard is this to do?

As to my specific questions...

1.) Does this system draw too much for a solar powered system to handle?
2.) How much room would the batteries take up?
3.) Which steps would have to be done by an electrician and at what cost?
4.) What are the costs of all of the components and where is the best place to source them?

Thanks in advance for any info, even if it be referring to other articles and websites.

Cheers,

Jeremy.

P.S. I am located in Camden, NSW

.
without going into the technical details, I can only suggest that it will be cheaper to replace that circuit..

Curious as to what goes BANG, destroying the entire circuit.. I can imagine fuses blowing, and GPO's popping... Surely the cable is still intact.. :!:

Back to basics.. If you want to power all that stuff from SOLAR then you have to remember that the solar-intensity varies during the day.. Thus to reliably power such motors, you really need a battery system that is charged by the Solar-Panels..
It's going to cost you MUCH , MUCH more than repair of the Grid-Circuit..

IMHO... :?

Many would likely be thinking.. "He's asking how to power all this, when he should be asking - Do I need all this"..

PS...
That would mean we would use about 10 -15 KW/h per day

So that is as much as many folk use for their entire home...

Can you confirm WHY the entire circuit has to be replaced.. Is there a BACK-HOE involved in teh failure process??
