i was just watching some youtube videos from a german guy owning a tesla.
100'000km driving equals a 5% capacity loss in the tesla battery. (1kw/h equal about 5km driving distance)
the battery goes to 1000'000km then a a very steep capacity loss will start. (by then the car probably won't be used anymore anyway.)

as for the peukert in the tesla battery supposedly it is so 1.04 or 1,05.
so he test drained the battery driving 100kmh and then 200kmh.
driving 200kmh the battery ouput was 5% less. (mind you not the kilometers driven, with higher wind resistance etc the distance driven was shorter at 200kmh driving. the 5% loss reflects purely what's coming out of the battery.)

he was also doing a youtube to see what happens when you drive until the battery is "empty". the software starts to make the speed slower and slower until you are down to 10kmh before the cars stops altogether. this state is of course still in the safe are of battery voltage.

as for charging, he only charges to 100% , just before a trip. at night he charges to 90% and then an hour before he drives off to 100%. this avoids the battery being in the high voltage range.

as for super charging on the road, basically you fast charge to 80% and then the next super charger to 80% again. this is much faster to do than going up to 100%. it takes about 20 minutes with the tesla super charger to 80%, the 100% charge takes about 40 minutes longer.

Yes all very interesting.

Our Imiev just ticked over 30,000km this morning 30,024km to be exact. I'm sure we have lost some range from 2012 considering its 2017 but not much.

As of now if we do 15,000km PA 300km week (about what we do every week now we use it more in the hinterland). Then it will take another 4 1/2 to 5 years to hit 100,000km the car will be 10 years old by then.

There is a guy in WA who purchased a 2012 imiev just before I got mine. last time I checked he had 92,000km on his Imiev and still has over 100km range. Car gets charged two times a day often to 100%.

So calendar life might play a part for me as I am not doing the km he has but it's well safe to say the battery will last 100,000km and still be healthy if your willing to put the km on it.

Time will tell over the next 5 years will see how I go.

1kwh from the battery = 10km driving for me in our imiev :D 1/2 the consumption of the big model S.

it's about 130wh km from the wall socket with all the inefficacy, idle consumption, charger losses. Dc/Dc fast charging is more efficient though.

my hilux petrol was parked that long in the carport, it had a 2m long vine growing into the mesh behind the rear window. i went shopping and noticed that when i returned with the shopping bags. embarassing!!!. i had a look today, and !!! another 2m vine is trying to invade the hilux. was thinking on potting the vines, but i suppose it will take out too much of the rear view eventually.
was thinking of buying an electric vehicle a few years down the track, however i am not sure my low use justifies it.

Yes Gordon I think there is a limit to style, comfort and performance vs economy. The Imiev is about the most frugal production EV you can get (one that has 4 seats air conditioning and can travel at freeway speeds) The model S is is very frugal considering it size,weight and performance. Though being offgrid I sure would notice the double kwhrs needed each day for the same trips. I'm sure if your happy to pay 150k for it then a few extra thousand on more PV wouldn't be a issue.

When I was working in a engineering workshop in Melb one of the guys turned up to worth with a mobility scooter. We spent a few lunch breaks and down time tricking the thing up for his friend with a 2 stroke motorbike engine. The end result was one very dangerous silly machine.

When I see the electric scooters parked outside a shop I often wonder what the results would be if i did a quick rewire of all the paralleled 12ah agm battery's to series configuration for way more voltage ...my wife never seems to share my enthusiasm, imagination or humor :lol:

Electric motors are great in this way particularly dc Brushed motors. You just keep feeding them more voltage and get massive gains in power with little effort in comparison to combustion engines.

What strikes me as crazy is the expensive use of Magnesium alloys etc to make everything light weight, then they put a heavy seat on it and recommend Lead-acid batteries! They talk about how it folds up to be very compact, but if you want to catch a taxi, I suspect the average taxi driver would quickly disappear when asked to put it in the boot.
I was discussing this with my brother yesterday as we want something for our mother, but it looks like we need to design and build something ourselves, to be lightweight and compact, so probably using BMX size wheels and bicycle weight tubing etc.

Thought it was worth checking the moving parts on the Imiev just to see if anything is broken, worn or loose.

The motor and drive line is very simple and compact. Not much that can go wrong. The single reduction gear (diff) that the motor ataches to has 750ml of oil in it and the book lists it good for over 100,000km.

There are two drive shafts to the wheels similar to what a front wheel drive car would use though I would expect them to last longer than a FWD cars CV joints as the Imiev is RWD and has a fixed outer geometry as it don't need to steer the rear.

The motor has who rubber hoses going to it for cooling fluid in at the top and out at the bottom of the motor.

Very compact with lost of room everything if you ever did need to remove anything.

It's hard to see in the pic but the entire drive line motor and reduction drive . Along with the motor controller, charger, water pump and vacuum pump all mount to a tubular space frame. By undoing a few large bolts on the tube frame all of the above can be remove as one unit. Reminds be a little of a VW beetle or combi van. This short video shows the complete unit being lowered out of the car and back in again. Along with the battery box. very quick and simple.

Battery box is in the middle of the car slung under the floor. You would need to wheel a table that could support 250kg under the car then lower the car down so the battery box rested on the table before removing the bolts and raising the car up away from the battery box.

The front of the car just has the steering rack (that has a small dc motor attached directly to it (looks like a wind screen wiper motor) That gives it plenty of steering assistance. The air conditioner compressor is a sealed unit that's also mounted to the same tube frame directly under the steering rack. Being a completely sealed compressor that runs directly from the battery (you can see the orange flex conduit that is the high voltage CD to the aircondishioner compressor in the pic) there shouldn't be much to go wrong with it.

The only other component is a small box near the fire wall that I call the kettle. It has a 5kw restive element inside it that heats coolant to circulate through the cars interior heater core. Again very simple plumbing and very easy to get at. Again high voltage dc orange conduit to the element.

Over all the Imiev is a very simple car and given the car was initially a 600cc turbo petrol car that was converted to electric. All of the EV components go on the car in a very simple kit like fashion rather than being overly complicated and integrated like a ground up EV build where a over enthusiastic kid using CAD has tried to be to smart and made the car hard to work on.

If the cars body was ever damaged beyond repair. All the EV components could be easily removed and re-purposed in a conversion or kit car.

Imiev is performing well to date. I still haven't spent a cent on any maintenance. My wife has been using it a lot to get around local and has taken over it naming it (her car).

There is a bit of rivalry going on in who can return home from a round trip having used less energy than the other persons effort. Rules are you have to note the real % SOC before setting of and after returning must do at least the posted speed limit.

My wife got back from shopping at Aldi yesterday 80km round trip (including climbing the hinterland range) boasting that she had just under 45% SOC remaining.

I really need a secret 10A socket or friend in town on mains power so I can cheat a little :lol:

Another thing I am noticing is just how good electric drive is off road. No Im not 4wding in the Imiev but living on a dirt track with very steep sections. Also being single lane you need to get on the shoulder a lot when other cars are traveling in the other direction. A few cars have got stuck doing so. Though I find the Imiev being RWD and rear engine along with the very linear smooth torque of the electric drive i can creep out of situations without spinning the wheels. A good traction control also helps but the electric drive plays a big part.

I will remove the big battery skid plate under the car soon as I have noticed a lot of gravel collecting there so worth cleaning up every few years.
