Power from osmotic pressure gradients

There's more to renewable energy than just wind and solar power - hydro, wave, geothermal to name a few. Discuss these RE alternatives here!

Power from osmotic pressure gradients

Postby MichaelB » Wed Nov 25, 2009 6:51 am

I just wanted an excuse to use that term :)

But seriously, a state-owned power plant in Norway has opened up a prototype power plant that produces power from a concept called osmotic pressure gradients.Osmotic pressure gradients effectively generate water pressure without raging currents.

Sounds good, but the energy yeild couple watts per square meter of collector, makes a very very large collector.

Michael, I think you better give them a quote for some PVs!

$8000000/4kW = $2000/Watt :o

re: gyro - hahahahhaah

'tis rather pricey - still, I wonder what solar cells were going for when they first came out.

I know the memory I have in my computer today was worth about $280,000 about 14 years ago. Back then I was paying 70 bucks a meg.. second-hand.

I guess the osmotic pressure gradients technology will get a tad cheaper over time.

Cool, I got to say osmotic pressure gradients again

Please keep those things away from Perth.

We already chew up a whopping power bill to create fresh water from salt water. The last thing we need is to turn that fresh water back into salt water. And don't get me started on those pesky laws of thermodynamics...

I for one shall not be investing my mattress money in osmotic pressure gradient power generation.

Maybe we can crank out a DIY book on making osmotic pressure gradient systems to power your home - we'll make gazilions! ;)

Step 1: buy huge quantities of pure, unpolluted drinking-quality water really cheaply on eBay...
